As a general rule, the bigger the turbo, the slower the spool so your guy friend is wrong. However, big turbos can produce more boost which is what you need to create massive HP numbers, but most cars with a setup like that are just dyno queens. The Z is setup for a turbo for each half of the V engine (hence twin turbo). It's not really practical to try to put a single turbo on a design like the Z's. As for upgraded twin turbos, like Chris said, it depends on the application. It's always a trade off b/w boost, spool up and several other factors.
